On February 4th, the Grade 9 Claude Watson students made a trip to Tarragon Theatre to watch the play Mischief, as part of the Integrated Arts course. This excursion provided students from all majors with an opportunity to see how different art forms come together in a single production.
Written by Mi’kmaw artist Lisa Nasson, Mischief follows the story of a young Mi’kmaq woman named Brooke working in a convenience store. The play is a combination of gentle comedy with more serious themes, such as Indigenous identity and social justice. The production specifically addresses the crisis of the missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls and the removal of colonial monuments, highlighting the ongoing importance of Truth and Reconciliation in Canadian art.
A mix of media is used in Mischief, including digital projections, auditory elements, and a large whale ribcage on stage. The multimedia elements allowed the story to shift smoothly between the everyday setting of the convenience store and more abstract, heightened scenes. For the ninth graders, this production was a powerful example of how various artistic disciplines work together to strengthen a play’s narrative and emotional impact.
The visit to Tarragon Theatre was a valuable opportunity for the grade 9 Claude Watson students to see artistic collaboration in a real-world setting. This experience will serve as inspiration for students when they begin their own collaborative projects later in the semester.
