“Riveting and terrifyingly relevant” is how Associate Director Mr. Harkness described this year’s school show, The Crucible, and it’s hard to argue otherwise. Based on real events from the Salem witch trials and written during the McCarthy era, the story shows what happens when fear spreads faster than truth.
The play follows a small town thrown into chaos after a group of girls is caught dancing in the woods. Rumours quickly turn into accusations, and neighbours become enemies almost overnight, not dissimilar to the red scare perpetrated by Joe McCarthy, the senator from Wisconsin in 1947. Arthur Miller wrote this play as an allegory of the witch hunt for communism in the states in the 50s and this is how the play is presented, in 1950s dress and setting.
Behind the scenes, the cast and crew have spent months preparing, blocking scenes, running lines, and refining every moment to bring this intense story to life. The goal isn’t just to entertain, but to make the audience think.
The actor of Betty Parris, Daphne Woods, shared, “[she hopes] audiences take away how powerful our words and accusations can be […] how anything can become weaponized.
This is not just a historical drama, it’s a story that still feels real, urgent, and unsettling.
Don’t miss The Crucible. Tickets are still available for purchase on School Cash Online and selling in the main hall during lunch for $20. The show begins at 7pm in Cringan Hall, with a special pre-show from the Director at 6:15pm. Tickets can also be purchased at the door.
