***Major Spoiler Alerts for Loki Seasons One and Two*** Olive Maeno-McGrath Pop Culture & Opinions After the tough couple of movies and tv shows that MCU fans have had to sit through, the bad streak of increasingly downhill marvel productions may have finally come to an end. After an exciting first season of Loki, viewers were left wanting more, sitting on the edge of their seats as the show ended on a cliffhanger. Similarly, the finale for Season two was action packed and, for many, finishing the show may have left them confused, with more questions than answers, most of which will hopefully be answered in this article.
In the finale (Episode Six: Glorious Purpose) of Loki Season 2, the God of Mischief takes center stage with newfound time-manipulating powers. As the Time Variance Authority faces the destruction of the Temporal Loom, Loki repeats the events over and over, using his power to try to stop it from exploding in any way possible. However, his repeated efforts lead to a shocking revelation – the Loom will never be able to handle an infinitely growing multiverse.
To save the TVA and the rest of the multiverse, Loki revisits important moments that occurred throughout the two seasons of the show, including meeting Ourobourus for the first time. At the Citadel, Loki faces a repetitive cycle of trying to stop Sylvie from killing He Who Remains, only to discover that everything, including his abilities to travel and change time, was orchestrated by the mastermind. Him dying and opening the multiverse to free travel had all been thought out.
Loki talks with important characters, traveling and repeating time to rewrite the multiverse's story. A deep conversation with Mobius helps Loki to understand his options, and think about what he may be forced to do. Eventually, Loki makes a heart-wrenching decision, leaving his friends and family to protect the multiverse.
The final episode ends with Loki grabbing dead branches of the multiverse and transforming it into a multiversal Tree, reshaping reality for everyone. The god of mischief ends up getting what he wants, power, and sits on the throne as the God of Stories as well. The epilogue after this action- packed episode reveals the aftermath, with the TVA having a new, more just structure, and familiar characters paving new lives. Mobius and Sylvie contemplate their futures together, honoring Loki's sacrifice that he made.
While this epic finale gives viewers a tearful smile, the series leaves room for uncertainty. As Marvel contemplates the character's future, Loki stands as a strong force in the MCU, shaping the Multiverse Saga and having control over all Marvel occurrences. It’s a meaningful conclusion for a god that has had some of the most character development out of anyone in the MCU.
Loki Season 2 wraps up with a powerful and thought-provoking finale, delivering on character development and multiverse- shattering consequences. Whether or not there will be a third season remains uncertain, but for now, Loki's journey stands as evidence of the ever-changing narrative within the MCU.
