After a two-year hiatus, the Earl Haig Hockey Team has made an extraordinary comeback, re-establishing itself as one of the TDSB’s top varsity hockey teams. Following their impressive run to the City Finals Championship Game last year—their first appearance in nearly three decades—the team is determined to build off their success this season.
This year, the team’s roster includes standout seniors Mateo Borrelli and Nicholas Tzanetakis, who played pivotal roles in last year’s deep playoff run. Borrelli emphasized the importance of building team chemistry, noting that getting to know all the players, returning and new, is key to their future success. Tzanetakis agreed with Borrelli, stating that he plans to use strong on-ice communication to find open areas and support his teammates.

Playing for the Earl Haig Hockey Team has been a meaningful experience for both athletes. Borrelli appreciates playing with friends and having schoolmates attend games to cheer them on. Tzanetakis finds joy in both meeting new teammates and reconnecting with those he doesn’t see year-round, as well as sharing their games on social media.
Both seniors reflected on the contrast between playing for their school and for their club teams. Borrelli feels a greater sense of pride and community representing Earl Haig and skating alongside classmates. Tzanetakis added that winning for the Haig feels far more fulfilling than club victories because it represents much more than a logo on a jersey.
Borrelli recalled last year’s Regional Finals game as his favourite Earl Haig Hockey memory. The game was close and intense, determining the advancement to city finals, but the team’s collective effort led to a hard-fought victory. Tzanetakis’ proudest moment was scoring the game-winning goal in the quarterfinals against Don Mills, a back-and-forth game ending in a 3-1 win for Haig.
The Earl Haig Hockey Team is built on a foundation of inclusivity and a supportive environment where players of all skill levels can thrive. The team’s success would not be possible without the dedication and leadership of their incredible coaches and staff. A special thanks goes out to Mr. Melendez, Mr. McFadden, and Mr. Cook for their tireless efforts in making the team’s comeback a reality over the past two years.
If hockey is your passion, don’t miss your chance to be part of this amazing program. Be sure to try out for the Earl Haig Hockey Team next year and experience the pride of representing your school on the ice. Even if you don’t make the team or don’t wish to play, there are many ways to support Earl Haig Hockey. Attending games and cheering on the team is a great way to show school spirit.
