Nadine Alsaghir Student Life In the face of setbacks, the girls’ basketball team at Earl Haig emerged not only as athletes, but as a resilient team that embraced every challenge on the court. They have always managed to find victories in lessons learned, despite a win or loss, with stepping stones toward improvement.

During a recent interview with one of the players, a unique narrative unfolded. It became apparent that basketball played a significant role beyond the court — it became a powerful avenue for conquering fears and coping with any anxious feelings. Tara Fadavi, a senior on the girls’ basketball team openly shared, “My goal in terms of basketball was to actually attack the basket. Overall, I’m a very anxious player; even though I have the skills, in a game. I just want to get rid of the ball, fearing mistakes like missing a shot”. Recognizing the need for improvement, she detailed a transformative approach guided by their basketball coach, Mr.James. Through her time playing on the team, she discovered a method to navigate and overcome the fear that once held her back.

The players’ journey goes beyond the court, encompassing not just the hard work and dedication but the challenges as well. Dealing with fear isn’t just a game-time struggle on the court; it mirrors real-life experiences. It’s not about mastering a sport; it’s about coping with challenges. In many ways, basketball serves as more than a game — it becomes a profound coping mechanism. It’s like a secret weapon, a space where the resilience players develop on the court seamlessly aids them in navigating the challenges life throws their way. Being part of the girls’ basketball team served as a catalyst for personal growth, pushing players beyond their comfort zone. During challenging times, there can be lots of feelings of inadequacy on the court, but also the realization that everyone faces challenges and strives for improvement. Seeking advice and building relationships in a team alleviates the sense of isolation when experiencing these feelings and also creates a supporting environment. “One of my biggest challenges was feeling like I was lacking in what I thought the people around me found “easy”. Once I started asking my teammates and coach for tips, I realized that we all have things we need or want to improve on, so I didn’t feel as alone once I began creating a relationship with my team”, Said Kamay Barrocks, one of the juniors on the team.

Game after game, the focus extended beyond the scoreboard and victories. Success was measured in the collective improvement of the team and joy derived from the game itself. Mr.James Says, “Winning is a byproduct of doing things properly. The goal is to be better, that at the end of the year, you improved. Winning for me isn’t the number one goal; people improving and having fun is”. The players’ victories are not the destination; they are the echoes of their journey marked by growth, improvement, and the sheer joy of the game.
